Tools and Hardware Reviews of Gardena Aquazoom 350/T Oscillating Sprinkler #31979-6Customer Review: Avoid Gardena at ALL costs... Summary: 1 StarsMy experience with Gardena has not been positive.
I have several of the Gardena products; the brand was highly recommended by a family member. I can say that when the products worked they worked well. However sprinklers like the Aquazoom have been nothing but trouble. They don't work reliably we have two and both have had problems. (as others here have stated) But, the most recent and serious issue was when the timer dial blew off the sprinkler as the water was turned on. We live on a community well system and don't have high water by any means. I seem to recall it being measured in the low 30s at one time, nowhere near the average 60psi.
My daughter was near the sprinkler when the timer flew off, and even though it was being used in a recently seeded area that was clear for more than 30' in every direction we were unable to find the the ejected dial. There must have been some great force to rocket that piece of plastic out if sight. I'm glad my daughter was free of the object's path.
I contacted Melnor, the US distributor, but was informed that Gardena had broken off the agreement with Melnor and I needed to contact Gardena Canada. Gardena Canada doesn't have a toll-free number, so you may be charged and without free international calls to Canada this can be expensive as they like to just sit in silence without saying anything. I was told to ship the product back to them. I packaged up the aquazoom and went to ship it... $30 was the cost, too much for me to pay to have an average sprinkler repaired or replaced. Again I contacted Canada and spoke with the head of operations, Mr. Mark Annett. He agreed that $30 was excessive and was willing to let me send in pictures of the broken sprinkler in place of shipping the product in. However, upon receipt of the pictures he responded by telling me they were unable to determine the cause and I'd still need to send it in. Again I raised the shipping cost issue and requested they cover the costs since I can't ship it to a US location which would be reasonable.
He didn't sound convinced that my shipping quote was accurate. He insisted that people from the US send him products all the time (is that a good thing to admit?) and the costs would be less than $10 by mail. I directed him to the USPS website to see the prices for himself. These days USPS only has two options for shipping to Canada, International Priority, or International Express. He saw the costs from USPS but continued to insist people are sending him stuff from the US for around $10. I offered to conference call USPS so we could all hear the same information, but he refused to do so. He also refused to just ship a replacement even after I had sent him photos documenting the exploded Aquazoom. He said he could not determine the cause from the photo... well, there's broken plastic where the dial use to be... For the record UPS and Fedex are more expensive ways to ship to Canada, and I believe UPS will bill the Canadian recipient a "brokerage fee" which will add to Gardena's bottom line, not yours.
Mr. Annett also informed me that there are no current plans in the works for a US distributor and that such a deal would be handled by the parent company, Gardena Germany.
Unless you have great faith Gardena products won't break and you won't need service than avoid this brand. Or your repair/replacement costs may outweigh the cost of a new item.
Description of Gardena Aquazoom 350/T Oscillating Sprinkler #31979-6This innovative oscillating sprinkler design can water medium-to-large yards, is fully adjustable, and comes with a built-in timer and flow control mechanisms. While many oscillating sprinklers allow you to adjust the range of the spray, this one also provides adjustments for controlling the width and the water flow. At the highest water pressure (56 psi), the width can be adjusted from 13 to 56 feet and the range from 23 to 69 feet. At low water pressure (28 psi), the width can be set from 11-1/2 to 47-1/2 feet and the range from 19-1/2 to 56.7 feet. The timer allows you to select watering times from 15 to 120 minutes, or it can be bypassed for constant flow. Gardena includes its Quick Connector hose adapter for easy time-saving hose changes and a special needle for keeping spray nozzles clean. The Aquazoom provides all the versatility and design features you could ask for in an oscillating sprinkler.
